How to Size Men's Belts by Kathryn Hatter ; Updated September 28, Artem Kononenko/Demand Media. Related Articles. 1 How to Measure a Bracelet Size; a size 36 belt to replace a belt between and 36; a size 38 belt to replace a belt between and 38 and a size 40 belt to replace a belt between and

This can be a bit tricky as belt measurements often do not align directly with waist measurements. But with a little research and practice, you can learn how to determine your belt size properly. Thread fabric measuring tape through the loops of the belt, and pinch the two sides together where they meet at the front.

Mark the place where they meet with a pencil or safety pin and remove the tape from the belt loops to see the length. Then, add 2 inches to the measurement on the tape to get your belt length, leaving room for a buckle. Consult a universal size chart to see the corresponding size, such as small, medium, or large.

Wear pants that fit well. Put on a pair of jeans or pants that you will wear frequently with a belt. These pants should not be too loose or too tight so that you will be able to get an accurate measurement of your waist. You want to get a belt that will fit with the pants you normally wear.

Use a fabric measuring tape. While you are wearing the pants, thread a fabric measuring tape through the belt loops of the pants. Pinch the two sides together where they meet in front.

This number will be your normal waist measurement. The measuring tape should expand slightly. Check to make sure that the measuring tape is in the middle or bottom of the belt holes, instead of flush with the top. Read the measurement in the mirror or mark the point where the two sides of the measuring tape meet with a safety pin. Remove the tape from the loops and read the measurement. Add two inches to the measurement. This is your belt size. You need to add two inches because the measurement of your waist only accounts for the direct circumference of your waist.

But the length of a belt does more than that — it includes additional length that must overlap to a certain extent at the buckle. The two added inches give you the wiggle room you need for a well-fitting belt.

Consult a universal size chart. Since many belts are sold by size small, medium, large, etc. Find a belt that fits. Take a belt that fits well — either one that you already have or go to a clothing store and try on belts until you find one that fits the way you want it to. You want the belt to have several notches on each side of the notch you use.

Spread the belt out flat. Put the belt on a flat surface like a table or on the floor. Grab a retractable measuring tape or a fabric measuring tape. Measure from the base of the buckle prong to the center hole.

Use the measurement that you found to order a belt. The number in inches that you found for the measurement of the belt will be the size you use for ordering your new belt.

For example, if the measurement number is 34 inches A correctly fitted belt is usually sized to the center hole. Glossy belts should be paired with highly-polished shoes; matte shoes go with matte belts.

Cloth shoes can be paired with cloth belts of a different color. Rare animal patterns can be very expensive, but should still be considered casual wear. A very high-quality ostrich-skin belt is too ostentatious for a business setting but can be very sharp-looking out on the town. Snakeskin and other reptilian patterns are eye-catching options as well — just keep in mind how much attention you want being drawn to your midsection.

The same holds true for brightly-colored belts of more conventional materials. There are a few common ways of approaching the basic task of holding your pants up.

Most belts fall into one of these styles:. Very similar-looking belts sometimes vary widely in cost. The quality of the leather is one common factor: Another good test of leather is to score the back very lightly with your fingernail — if a faint line appears, the leather is still soft and fresh.

Old, hard leather will resist your nail. Construction is the other major factor affecting the price of a belt. Look for small, tight stitching with no loose ends wherever the leather has been sewn. Buckles attached with a snap on the back of the belt can be changed out, while a buckle stitched in place is the only one you can wear with the belt — some men may find the flexibility of a snapped belt worth paying more for, especially in good leather. Belts can be custom-cut at some leather goods stores.

Brand name will also play a factor, but means quite a bit less than the other factors. Spend the money on quality instead. Speaking of designer goods, some high-end jeans have a famous label right between two of the belt loops.

You may be tempted to leave the belt off, so that the label can be displayed more prominently. Un-belted jeans, even expensive ones, make you look like a slob. Choose a slim belt that lets part of the label show and leave it to other people to notice your fantastic style — or not. Interested to learn how to match clothing?
